Dress-up Doll or Gadget Toy?

Barbie was never a "thing" in my life, as I grew up in the 70's in Portugal, and Barbie only arrived here in the mid 80's, at the peak of her cheesyness, at a time I hardly would become mesmerised by her. But since then, I scavenged most of the dolly shoes in my fairly big collection either buying cheap outfits or those shoe blisters. For that I regularly visited Toys 'R Us and similar stores (mostly big supermarket's toy section), where I kept myself up to date with all the doll, toy and Barbie items.

1980's Barbie | 1970's Action Man

When Barbie arrived, Action Man, I mean the 70's Action Man, with real buttons and very detailed clothing and items - that fascinated me -, was in decline, to slowly become what he currently is, a Gadget Toy with his clothes "glued" to his body.

All this to come to a phenomenon that started occurring with Action Man and is currently in full bloom with Barbie dolls: the transformation from dress-up dolls to gadget toys that allow kids to do anything but dress them up. It all started with the glued on underpants (both on AM and B), which I regard as more offensive than the erasing of the genitals... But this led to the slow disappearance of doll clothes from the store racks.

This largely beats the original point of said toys, where's the fun of dressing your Barbie to the occasion? Where's the fun of your Action Man being more than a commando or scuba diver? With Action Man it was probably one of those obnoxious society chauvinistic prejudices, that "boys don't play dress-up". Bullshit! Where's the metro sexual Action Man? He died when being metro sexual was all the hype! Not that was anything feminine in Action Man's combat boots and 99% military outfits... well... With Barbie it actually beats me, because it all started with the Bratz boom, who came with a huge range of clothes, actually nice furniture and loads of accessories. Mattel managed to legally annihilate Bratz, and with them the dress-up doll concept, like a pink hegemony that leaves no space to other colours or the toy trend Barbie started in the first place: the fashion doll.

If you go to a toy store nowadays, you'll have a hard time getting Barbie clothes and/or accessories and not one single blister for Action Man. Action Man dolls now are more cyborgs than human, as gadgets and guns spring out of their own permanently clothed bodies. Most Barbies sing, dance or light up, but their clothes and shoes are embedded to their bodies (except for the occasional tutu) and they're not dress-up dolls any more. Some cheaper Barbies still come with a simple dress and shoes, but then, to add some more clothes to her doll's closet, the girl either has to buy a new doll or have someone make her some.

That's one of the reasons I definitely prefer Blythe dolls. They are real fashion dolls and awesome at that. Although official separate clothes sets are rare, that surely comes from so many fans making and selling all kinds of outfits, from the most simple to the most intricate fantasy outfit. For me they're just right, their bodies are very well proportioned and their big heads are perfect to create hats or do hair styling. As I make my doll's outfits (90% of their wardrobe is Leo COUTURE), they have a more versatile closet than my own.

With this and the growth of online shopping, I lost the small interest I had in Barbie dolls and I long ago lost it on Action Man. I no longer scavenge for Barbie shoes and visit toy stores much more seldom than before.

Boneca Para Vestir ou Brinquedo com Truque?

A Barbie nunca importou na minha vida, pois cresci em Portugal nos anos 70 e a Barbie só chegou cá em meados dos 80s, no auge da sua pirosice, numa época em que eu dificilmente me encantaria por ela. Mas desde então arranjei a maioria dos sapatos de bonecas da minha colecção razoável, comprando fatos baratinhos ou as embalagens de sapatos. Para tal visitava regularmente o Toys 'R Us e lojas semelhantes (principalmente a secção de brinquedos dos hipermercados), onde me mantinha a par das bonecas, brinquedos e Barbies.

Quando a Barbie chegou, o Action Man, quero dizer o Action Man dos anos 70, com botões verdadeiros e roupas e acessórios muito detalhados - que me fascinavam -, estava em declínio, para se tornar lentamente o que é agora: um Brinquedo com Truque com as roupas "coladas" ao corpo.

Tudo isto para chegar a um fenómeno que começou com o Action Man e que está actualmente no auge com as Barbies: a transformação de bonecas de vestir para brinquedos com truque, que permitem aos miúdos fazer tudo menos vesti-los. Tudo começou com as cuecas coladas (tanto no AM como na B), que acho mais ofensivo que a eliminação dos genitais... Mas isto levou ao lento desaparecimento das roupas para bonecas das prateleiras das lojas.

Isto fica completamente ao lado do objectivo original dos ditos brinquedos, onde fica o gozo de vestir a Barbie de acordo com a ocasião? Onde fica o gozo de o Action Man ser mais que um fuzileiro ou mergulhador? Com o Action Man foi provavelmente um daqueles preconceitos irritantes e chauvinistas da sociedade, que os "meninos não brincam às roupas". Tretas! Onde anda o Action Man metrosexual? Morreu quando ser metrosexual era o que estava a dar! Não que houvesse algo feminino nas botas da tropa e 99% fardas militares do Action Man... pois... Com a Barbie não faço a mínima ideia, pois tudo começou com o boom das Bratz, que vinham com um enorme guarda-roupa, mobília simpática e toneladas de acessórios. A Mattel conseguiu aniquilar legalmente as Bratz, e com elas o conceito de bonecas de vestir, como uma hegemonia cor-de-rosa que não deixa espaço para outras cores ou a tendência nos brinquedos que a própria Barbie começou: a boneca de moda.

Se hoje formos a uma loja de brinquedos, vamos ter dificuldade em arranjar roupas e/ou acessórios para a Barbie e nem uma embalagem para o Action Man. Os bonecos Action Man são agora mais uns cyborgs que humanos, quando truques e armas saltam dos seus próprios corpos permanentemente vestidos. A maioria das Barbies canta, dança ou ilumina-se, mas as suas roupas e sapatos estão embutidas nos seus corpos (excepto o tutu ocasional) e já não são bonecas para vestir. Algumas Barbies mais baratas ainda vêm com um vestido simples e sapatos, mas então, para adicionar mais roupas ao seu roupeiro, a menina tem de comprar uma boneca nova ou ter alguém que lhas faça.

Essa é uma das razões porque realmente prefiro as Blythes. São verdadeiras bonecas de moda e fantásticas nisso. Apesar de serem raros os conjuntos de roupa oficiais, isso vem certamente de tantos fãs fazerem e venderem todo o tipo de fatos, do mais simples ao fato de fantasia muito complicado. Para mim estão no ponto, os seus corpos são muito bem proporcionados e as suas cabeçorras são perfeitas para fazer chapéus ou penteá-las. Como sou eu que faço as roupas das minhas bonecas (90% do seu guarda-roupa é Leo COUTURE), elas têm um guarda-roupa mais versátil que o meu.

Com isto e o crescimento das compras online, perdi o pouco interesse que tinha na Barbie e há muito que perdi o do Action Man. Já não busco sapatos da Barbie e vou mais raramente às lojas de brinquedos que antes.

Organizing Doll Clothes

Maybe I should start from the beginning, my Sindy doll. She has a decent amount of clothes which I stored mostly in the doll furniture I already owned: a wardrobe and a chest of drawers. But they weren't enough so I stored the less used clothes in simple shoeboxes.
Then Mariko arrived and in two years time she had a huge wardrobe that didn't fit in the 4-drawer CD storage I got for her clothes. Fortunately IKEA also arrived in Portugal by that time, so I started collecting the FIRA units, and bummer, they were discontinued...
By the time I started furiously sewing for my Blythe dolls I first used the previously owned by Mariko CD drawers, some wooden boxes people gave me and a few plastic units, bought at discount stores, for the smaller bits. But soon they weren't nearly enough, especially if you have 6 different Blythes that don't share the same style.
I tried some other (temporary) solutions, but all the time my mind came to an ideal drawer unit... In most furniture stores small drawer units are expensive, and not all did fit my needs. After thoroughly searching all drawer units at the IKEA website I finally decided upon the HELMER, of which I already owned one unit for my working/office space. I admit, I'm a fan of IKEA's metal furniture, and I also own other pieces, like the IKEA PS, and as it's really cheap, sturdy, has wheels and each drawer has plenty of storage room, doesn't take much room in my tiny flat, and fits my taste for industrial design, I bought it last spring. It's still not enough, small items, shoes, underwear, bags and part of their hats are still distributed through some of the old boxes and storage, but the clothes are all there, neatly organized and there's still room for more.

Now I decided to take some pictures of how I organized it, which will maybe followed by some more posts of the girls' wardrobe in the future. Each drawer is labelled in Japanese, a habit I got from when I started learning the language and it stuck. I still plan on making some dividers, to keep things even more neat, and maybe in the future I'll get another unit and get rid of the many other boxes and drawers piled on top of it.
Here's how it goes:

HATS/ACCESSORIES
Where I keep the more delicate and bigger hats, that can't be folded/scrunched and their hair clips and necklace boxes.
TOPS
This is one that needs dividers. I keep the warmer knit tops in the back and the more used t-shirts and button shirts in the front.
BOTTOMS
I try to keep the trousers in the back and the skirts, which are mostly short, in the front. Long skirts have a smaller pile. I'll add dividers some day.
ONEPIECE (DRESSES)
I keep Strawberry's huge A-line dress collection, as they're the same shape and smaller up front, the same with the shorter dresses and the bigger and longer dresses in the back. Yeah, dividers.
COATS
I try to keep capes, knits and jackets in separate piles.
COSPLAY
Only the bigger more delicate costumes are here, as some of the smaller ones (like Asuka's highschool skirt and shirt) can be used as normal clothes. The headdresses and cosplay accessories are stored in another unit.

Organizando Roupa de Bonecas

Talvez deva comaçar do início, com a minha boneca Sindy. Ela tem uma boa quantidade de roupa, a maioria guardo na mobília de boneca que já tinha: um roupeiro e uma cómoda. Mas não chegavam, portanto guardei as roupas menos usadas em simples caixas de sapatos.
Então chegou a Mariko e em dois anos ela tinha um guarda-roupa gigantesco que não cabia no conjunto de 4 gavetas para CDs que lhe arranjei. Felizmente a IKEA também veio para Portugal nessa altura e comecei a coleccionar os módulos FIRA e, bolas, deixaram de ser fabricados...
Quando comecei a coser furiosamente para as minhas bonecas Blythe, primeiro usei as gavetas para CDs que eram da Mariko, umas caixas de madeira que me foram dando e uns módulos de plástico que comprei em lojas dos chineses, para os itens mais pequenos. Mas logo deixaram de ser suficiente, principalmente se se tem 6 Blythes diferentes que não partilham os mesmo estilo.
Arranjei umas soluções temporárias, mas sonhava sempre com o módulo de gavetas ideal... Na maioria das lojas de mobília os módulos de gavetas pequenos são caros e nem todos serviam para o que necessitava. Depois de esmifrar todos os módulos de gavetas no site da IKEA, finalmente decidi-me por um HELMER, o qual eu já tinha um módulo para a minha área de trabalho/escritório. Admito, sou fã da mobília de lata da IKEA, e também tenho outras peças, como o IKEA PS, e como é muito barato, robusto, tem rodinhas, cada gaveta tem muito espaço de arrumação, não ocupa muito espaço no meu apartamento minúsculo e liga com o meu gosto por mobília industrial, comprei-o na Primavera passada. Mesmo assim não chega, os itens pequenos, sapatos, roupa interior, malas e parte dos chapéus ainda estão distribuídos por algumas das antigas caixas e arrumação, mas as roupas estão todas lá, bem arrumadinhas e ainda sobra espaço.

Agora decidi fotografar o modo como o organizei, e talvez se sigam mais posts com o guarda-roupa das moças no futuro. Cada gaveta está etiquetada em japonês, um hábito que adquiri quando estava a começar a aprender a língua e que ficou. Ainda quero fazer divisórias, para poder manter tudo mais arrumadinho, e talvez no futuro compre outro módulo e me veja livre das caixas e caixinhas que estão em cima dele.
Está arrumado assim:

CHAPÉUS/ACESSÓRIOS
Onde guardo os chapéus maiores e mais delicados, que não podem ser dobrados ou amachucados e as caixas com ganchos de cabelo e colares.
TOPS
Esta precisa de divisórias. As camisolas de malha ficam atrás e as t-shirts e camisas mais usadas à frente.
PARTES DE BAIXO
Mantenho as calças atrás e as saias, a maioria curtas, à frente. As saias compridas estão num montinho mais pequeno. Há-de ter divisórias.
VESTIDOS
A enorme colecção de vestidos em A da Strawberry fica à frente por terem o mesmo feitio e serem curtos, o mesmo com os outros vestidos curtos e os vestidos maiores e mais volumosos ficam atrás. Pois, divisórias.
CASACOS
Mantenho as capas, as malhas e os casacos em montes separados.
COSPLAY
Aqui só estão os fatos maiores e mais delicados, pois alguns dos mais pequenos (como o uniforme da Asuka) podem ser usados como roupa comum. Os acessórios de cabelo e outros acessórios de cosplay estão noutro módulo mais pequeno.

This year Yuuko-san assisted me with the nengajou (Japanese New Year Card) and incarnated a Yorkshire sheep for... you guessed it, the Year of the Sheep. She's also wearing a variant of Leo COUTURE's Fuzzy Capes, which you can find at my Etsy.

 

 

After Christmas BlytheCon UK 2015 was announced, again using my artwork. This year it'll be in London again and the venue looks really promising. The theme had a Mod-Kensington-Chelsea-60's vibe, which is very dear to me. I also already started with my collection, the buttons and snaps I ordered already arrived, and the plan is to slowly do it between jobs and other life compromises. During the second half of 2014, I worked on and off on this OOAK commission, based on the Ultimate Madoka, from the anime series Puella Madoka Magica, outfit, but sadly the client dropped out when it was nearly finished. It is custom made for an A-Zone Pure Neemo S body, and is currently available at my Etsy store too. It was an interesting project, I'd love to see a doll enjoying it to its best, for I don't own or intent to own a doll with a PN body.

 

Feliz 2015 + BCUK 2015 + Madoka

 

Este ano a Yuuko-san foi a minha assistente no nengajou (cartão de Ano Novo japonês) encarnando uma ovelha do Yorkshire para... adivinharam: o Ano da Cabra/Ovelha. Ela também veste uma variante das Fuzzy Capes da Leo COUTURE, disponíveis na minha Etsy.

 

 

Depois do Natal foi anunciada a BlytheCon UK 2015, novamente utilizando as minhas ilustrações. Este ano será novamente em Londres e o local do evento é muito prometedor. O tema anda à roda do Mod-Kensington-Chelsea-60's, o qual é muito especial para mim. Também já comecei com a minha colecção, os botões e molas que encomendei já chegaram e o plano é ir fazendo entre trabalhos e compromissos da vida real. Durante a segunda metade de 2014, fui fazendo aos poucos esta encomenda única, baseada no fato da Ultimate Madoka, da série anime Puella Madoka Magica, mas infelizmente a cliente desistiu quando já estava quase acabado. Foi feito à meduda para um corpo Pure Neemo S da A-Zone e também já está disponível na minha Etsy. Foi um projecto interessante, adoraria ver uma boneca a desfrutá-lo em pleno, uma vez que não tenho nem pretendo ter uma boneca com um corpo PN.
